On Friday 20th, Reading Camera Club welcomed Rod Sloane, who had travelled down from West London to present his lively and informative talk – How To Break Into Sports Photography – for us.
Rod shared with us a fascinating set of high quality images focussing on his main interest – cycling events. The aim of his photography, he said, is to convey the joy of competition.
Rod led us through the techniques which he uses to get great images of cycling events, both indoor and outdoor, including panning (which he convinced us is not as difficult as some people think) and how to make sure that you have the best background to maximise the impact of the shot. He concentrates on both the action and the emotion in his work.
Apart from technique, he also explained the importance of getting the correct accreditation to make sure that you are in the best position to photograph the action, and how to get that accreditation. He urged us to put our images on Instagram to get them seen by the widest audience.
Next week is our first print competition of the year. A great opportunity to come along and see the quality and range of work being produced at the club.
